Apothica Candles

  • Project type: Professional work
  • Roles: Branding, logo design
  • Collaborator: Madison Grey (candlemaker, photography)
  • Tools: Illustrator and Photoshop

Overview

The client, a practicing witch, began making candles with specific intentions in mind, using ingredients that reflected them in magic lore. They wanted branding to go with the candles to potentially sell them in local stores so I worked with them to make this possible.

Challenge

The branding solution needed to both reflect the witchy nature of the candles while being symbolic of the ritualistic uses behind them. There were three scents, all named after their intentions: Protection, Self-Love and Uplifting. One main logo and 3 separate logos for each scent was needed.

Solution

A great deal of research went into the project. Scouring books for symbology, taking pages of notes, speaking to witch practitioners, and gathering many ancient Grecian pottery references after we had decided to lean into the Greek pantheon as part of the branding.

Final Logos

Primary Logo

The pantheon includes the Goddess of Witchcraft, Hecate, who has many symbols associated with her. After exploring options for the main logo with her various symbols in mind, we went with that of a dog and a key. The logo evokes protection and guidance through the person's ritual.

Protection Logo

This logo includes a variety of symbols for its intention. This includes allusions to the gods of protection, Apollo and Artemis, with the wolf, cypress trees and arrow.

Self-love Logo

Symbology for self-love comes in two, things that are dual and reflects loving all of yourself, even the flaws. With this in mind, the moth is two moths, merged into one but with different wings. The rose's stem wraps around it, holding it, ending in an enlightened blossom.

Uplifting Logo

The symbols here are mainly bright and airy, with a hummingbird enjoying the nectar of apple blossoms, lit by the warm sun.
